Feeling of Failure in People with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD): Prediction Based on the Pattern of Procrastination, Lack of Planning and Sensitivity to Rejection

Abstract
This study aimed to predict the sense of failure in individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) based on procrastination patterns, lack of planning, and rejection sensitivity. Employing a descriptive-correlational design, the research surveyed a statistical population of 357 individuals who responded to an open invitation to participate during the fall and winter of 2023 at the Acceptance and Commitment Psychological Service Center in Tehran. Through purposive sampling, 82 participants (approximately 23% of volunteers) were screened and diagnosed with BPD according to DSM-5-TR criteria. Measurement tools included the Defeat Scale (DS), Multidimensional Experiential Avoidance Questionnaire (MEAQ), Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire (RSQ), and Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11). Data were analyzed using regression analysis. The results indicated that procrastination and rejection sensitivity significantly predicted feelings of failure in individuals with BPD, whereas lack of planning did not emerge as a significant predictor. These findings suggest that procrastination—delaying tasks despite potential negative consequences—directly contributes to a sense of failure, independent of planning deficits. Additionally, heightened rejection sensitivity may trigger maladaptive responses in interpersonal interactions, exacerbating feelings of failure. The study highlights the distinct roles of procrastination and rejection sensitivity in the emotional experiences of individuals with BPD, offering insights for targeted therapeutic interventions.
