Predicting High-risk Internet Behaviors in Adolescents Based on Parental Bonding, Social Adjustment and Self-Awareness

Abstract
The present study was conducted to investigate the prediction of adolescents' high-risk internet behaviors based on parental bonding, social adjustment and self-awareness. The research method employed is a descriptive correlational design. The statistical population of the research comprised all adolescents enrolled in high schools in Shiraz (a city in Iran) during the 2023-2024 academic year, of which 380 individuals were selected through a multi-stage cluster sampling method. The measurement tools employed in this study encompassed the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI), the Bell Adjustment Inventory (BAI), the Self-Awareness Questionnaire (SAQ), and the Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale (GPIUS2). Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that parental bonding, social adjustment and self-awareness collectively accounted for 44.1% of the variance in high-risk internet behaviours. The findings demonstrate that parental care, social adjustment, and self-awareness can serve as effective predictors of adolescents' high-risk internet behaviours, with the provision of extreme support emerging as a significant positive predictor (P<0.05). In light of the findings of this study, and given the potential for rapid technological changes to engender high-risk internet behaviours among adolescents, counsellors and psychologists may wish to take the results of the present study into consideration.
