The objective of this study was to ascertain the efficacy of group therapy based on the principles of acceptance and commitment in reducing parental stress and enhancing mother-child interaction in mothers with intellectually disabled children. This was a quasi-experimental study utilizing a pre-test-post-test design with a control group. The statistical population was constituted by mothers of intellectually disabled children residing in Bojnourd (a city in Iran). A total of 30 individuals were selected using convenience sampling and randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups. The data were collected using the Parenting Stress Index (PSI) and the Parent-Child Relationship Scale (PCRS). The experimental group underwent acceptance and commitment therapy for a total of eight 90-minute sessions, while the control group did not receive any form of intervention. The analysis of covariance demonstrated that acceptance and commitment therapy had a statistically significant impact on reducing parental stress and enhancing mother-child interaction in mothers with children with intellectual disabilities (P < 0.05). The findings indicate that acceptance and commitment therapy can facilitate the development of psychological skills and enhance the well-being of mothers with children who have intellectually disabled children.
